Sofa Stain Removal Guide — How to Tackle Common Stains at Home

The moment a spill happens on your sofa, every second counts. Acting quickly and using the right technique can be the difference between a stain that comes out completely and one that sets permanently into the fabric. This guide covers first-response techniques for the most common household sofa stains, along with clear guidance on when to call professionals.

The Golden Rule: Blot, Never Rub

The most important rule of stain removal is to blot, not rub. Rubbing a stain spreads the substance outward, increasing the stain's coverage, and pushes it deeper into the fabric fibres and foam beneath. Always use a clean white cloth (to avoid colour transfer) and blot from the outside of the stain inward, applying gentle pressure and lifting straight up.

Food and Drink Stains

For food spills, first remove any solid material with a spoon or blunt knife — scrape gently rather than smearing. Then blot the liquid component with a clean cloth. Mix a solution of 1 teaspoon washing-up liquid with 1 cup cold water and apply sparingly to the stain using a clean cloth, blotting rather than rubbing. Follow with plain cold water to rinse the soap, then blot dry.

For coloured drinks like tea, coffee, or juice, the same approach applies but act as fast as possible — these stains set very quickly into certain fabric types.

Pet Accident Stains

Pet urine stains require special treatment because the uric acid crystals that cause the persistent smell must be broken down, not just masked. Blot up as much liquid as possible immediately. Apply a commercial enzyme-based pet stain remover (available at pet stores) according to the directions — these products contain enzymes that specifically break down uric acid. Avoid steam cleaning or hot water on fresh pet urine — heat can set the stain and odour permanently.

Ink Stains

Ballpoint ink can often be lifted with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Apply a small amount to a clean white cloth and gently dab the ink stain — do not rub. Blot with a clean dry cloth between applications. This works on many fabric types but test on a hidden area first as some fabrics react to alcohol.

Blood Stains

Blood stains must always be treated with cold water — never warm or hot water, which will set a blood stain permanently. For fresh blood, blot immediately with a clean cloth dampened with cold water. For dried blood, mix a small amount of hydrogen peroxide with cold water and apply carefully — but test on a hidden area first as hydrogen peroxide can lighten some fabric colours.

When to Call a Professional

Some stains are beyond home treatment — not because they cannot be removed, but because home treatment without the right products and extraction equipment can spread the stain, push it deeper, or damage the fabric. If a stain doesn't respond to first-response treatment, or if it covers a large area, call Rakesh Sofa Dry Clean in Ludhiana for professional stain treatment.

Our technicians have access to professional-grade enzyme solutions, solvent treatments, and extraction equipment that remove stains that household products cannot. Call us on +91 7508870765 for stain emergency assistance across Ludhiana.
